Breakout EDU provides a library of hundreds of games for grades K - 12 that are aligned to standards in numerous subjects such as computer science, English, math, social studies, and science. The games can be completed with a physical box that is locked with a variety of types of locks or digitally where students complete the games on their Chromebooks. Here is an example of a digital game.
These games are a great way to get students engaged in classroom content and a way to also encourage them to use their collaboration and critical thinking skills.
Mrs. Becker has used the digital box in her ELA classes. Students had to solve multiple clues to open a box that was locked with a variety of types of locks. To decipher the clues, students had to discuss common errors that are made in the English language such as affect vs effect, when to correctly capitalize words and correct forms of punctuation.
