Concept Mapping

Concept mapping has been used in classrooms forever.  Here are some tech tools that you and/or your students can use on a Chromebook or iPad in your classroom today.  Here is a great podcast from Cult of Pedagogy if you are instead learning more about this great instructional tool.

How can graphic organizers be used in your classroom?

  • Have students use them to take notes
  • Students can brainstorm ideas for a writing project
  • You can use them as as an assessment tool to see if students can determine relationships among topics covered
  • As a teacher you can use them to help in unit/lesson planning
  • Use them as an opening activity to see what students already know about a topic or remember from a previous lesson

What free tech tools can be used for concept mapping?

Tools for Chromebooks/Computers

Several of these tools have both a Google Chrome Extension and a Google Drive Add-on.  The Google Chrome Extension will put a little icon in the upper right window of your Chrome browser window allowing quick access to the tool.  A Google Drive Add-on lets you run the program as part of your Google Drive.  Once an add-on is attached to your drive, it functions just like Docs, Sheets, etc. To attach an Add-on follow these steps: (1) Go to your google drive; (2) Click on New; (3) Go to More; (4) Go to Connect More Apps; (5) Search for the app you are looking for and connect it to your drive.

Apps for iPads
If you are interested in having one of these apps installed on an iPad please contact Mrs. Wright or Mrs. Bishop.
