Student Surveys

Gathering feedback from our students is important and can give us valuable information as educators. “A student survey allows students to voice their issues, needs, and desires, giving feedback on how a teacher can change his or her instruction to help them perform better in class” (Edutopia).

In addition to using Google Forms, here are a few additional tools you can use to quickly gather feedback from your students:
  • Survey Monkey - For free you can create unlimited surveys. Each survey can be up to 10 questions and collect up to 100 responses per survey
  • Typeform - The the free account here you can collect up to 100 responses a month on a survey that has up to 10 questions
  • Survey Gizmo - For free you can have up to 3 active surveys at a time. Each survey can be up to 125 questions and you can collect up to 100 responses per survey.

Ideas for Your Classroom

  • Use as a preassessment to find out what students already know about a topic
  • Use as a bell ringer to see what students understand from a lesson
  • Use to gather student voice on how classroom instruction is going
  • Use at the beginning of the year or semester to gather basic information about students
  • Use to identify students preferred way of learning
NOTE: In gathering feedback, please remember not to give students learning style surveys; this can cause our students to believe they can only learn in one way, which isn't true. While learners have preferences in how they learn, it is not indicative of their abilities nor developing a growth mindset.
