Ways to Incorporate VR in Your Classroom

Virtual Reality (VR) is is a great way to make your content come alive for students and to take them
to places they may never be able to go.

5 Ways to Use VR in Your Classroom

1. Preview a topic
Show students content they are going to be learning more about in the next unit.  Have them view a scene and then talk about what they saw.  This is a great way to see what their background knowledge is and to see what questions they have about the topic.  This is also a great way to get them "hooked" into the upcoming lessons.

2. Wrap up a lesson/unit
After talking about the content, take students on an expedition to review what they just learned.  Go through a scene and see if they can point out things discussed in class.

3. Experience careers in your subject area
Did you have a unit not take up as much as planned?  Have an odd extra day before a long vacation and don't really want to start something new?  Use VR to allow students to experience the daily responsibilities of a career in your subject area.

4. Take a Field Trip
Are you studying a certain country or reading a story that takes place in another part of the world?  Take your students on a field trip to that location without leaving your physical classroom.  This experience will help to bring that country or location to life as the students are learning/reading about it.

5. Tour a College
There are several colleges that you can tour.  Students can get a feel for the college grounds and learn the history of the college.  This may be a great thing to do with Juniors and/or Seniors if you have an extra day right before a vacation or after a day of testing.

How do you get VR in your classroom?

We have a Google Expeditions kit of 10 goggles in our district that can be used in your classroom.  There are over 700 Google Expeditions you can take your students on.  They are all found in this spreadsheet that is updated frequently by Google.  The easiest way to search the spreadsheet is to use the Find feature (CTRL + F) to enter and search by the topic you are looking for.

To preview the expeditions you will first need to download the Expeditions app on your phone or check out an iPad from the media center.  Then follow these instructions.

Once you have an Expedition that you would like to use in your class, complete this form to check out the Expeditions kit.  The kit will come to your room all ready for you to use with your students.  The Technology Department will set it all up and pack it back up when you are finished.
